NBA Playoffs: The First Round (Yawn)

Well the first weekend of the NBA playoffs is in the books, and what have we learned? Seeding is pretty much going to hold.

1) Top seeds San Antonio and Detroit are still the heavy, heavy favorites to make the finals. Both of them destroyed their 8th seeded opponents. This is likely to continue.

2) Contenders Miami and Phoenix both won, but at least their opponents made them work a bit. Chicago is a scrappy team, but they will not be able to overcome Miami's depth and experience. The Lakers can only beat the Suns if Phil Jax can successfully balance the strategy of pounding the Suns down low with Kobe's scoring binges.

3) Dallas and the L.A. Clippers are seeded badly because of the NBA's division champ rules. Hopefully they will change this next year. Regardless of seeding though, both teams are playing like we would expect, and both are likely to advance to the next round.

4) Lebron, Lebron, Lebron. He played great in his first playoff game. And yes, he is destined for greatness. But could we stop the Jordan/Magic comparisons until he at least wins a playoff series? The Wizards have more than enough firepower to ruin his coronation.

5) Indiana vs. NJ was the only real 'upset' in my book, and that was on a questionable last second foul call. This could go either way, and even though I don't really care about either team, this is probably the most exciting first round series.

We'll have to wait 'til Round 2 for some truly worthy matchups.
